The Company is seeking a Head of Legal / Deputy General Counsel to build and lead its legal function, advising executive leadership and the board on intellectual property, open-source governance, AI regulation, product security, commercial agreements, nonprofit governance, and international matters. The role includes developing IP strategies, licensing frameworks, contributor agreements, and policies for third-party integrations and commercial use. The legal leader will partner with product and engineering teams on data access, permissions, privacy, security, user consent, agent autonomy, and accountability, translating evolving legal requirements into practical guidance. Responsibilities also include negotiating partnerships and contracts, supporting board and nonprofit operations, coordinating specialist counsel, and establishing scalable legal processes and risk frameworks. Candidates should hold a JD or equivalent qualifying legal degree and be admitted to practice in a relevant jurisdiction; at least seven years of relevant legal experience is typically expected. Strong expertise in intellectual property, software licensing, trademarks, copyright, and technology transactions is required, along with familiarity with open-source licensing and software governance. Experience advising on AI regulation, product counsel, data governance, privacy, cybersecurity, or technology risk is important, as is the ability to address complex questions involving data access, permissions, autonomy, and responsibility. Nonprofit governance experience is valuable, while international legal experience is preferred. Excellent judgment and communication skills, independence, and a builder mindset are essential.
