General Counsel

The Company is seeking a General Counsel to serve as its principal legal advisor and provide strategic guidance on institutional strategy, governance, compliance, litigation, and risk management. The role advises senior leadership and trustees, interprets applicable laws and regulations, and coordinates legal matters across the organization. Responsibilities include directing litigation and investigations, reviewing contracts, assessing legal risks, and establishing safeguards and internal controls. The General Counsel also leads legal staff, manages outside counsel and the legal budget, and promotes legal awareness through training and collaboration. Candidates must hold a Juris Doctor degree and have at least six years of professional experience in legal administration, policy development, or a related field. The role requires the ability to communicate in American Sign Language, strong analytical judgment, effective written and presentation skills, and high ethical standards. Applicants should demonstrate knowledge of civil rights laws, including disability rights requirements, and experience providing strategic counsel on complex matters. Supervisory experience and familiarity with higher education are preferred; the successful candidate must hold or obtain a District of Columbia law license within one year.
