About Us
Exergy3 is a Scottish cleantech company developing and commercialising a high-temperature Thermal Energy Storage (TES) system for industrial decarbonisation. Our technology converts surplus electricity into stored heat and delivers it as process steam or hot air directly into industrial plant, displacing natural gas and materially reducing carbon emissions, all without requiring customers to redesign their processes.
Our technology is innovative. The next chapter is financing and building the business behind it.
We're hiring a Chief Financial Officer to guide Exergy3 through its scale-up journey to Series A. We are seeking an accomplished finance leader who can secure capital and equip our Board and leadership team with the insight and judgement to make consequential decisions with confidence.
The Role
Reporting to the CEO and working alongside our Financial Controller, you will hold full ownership of the finance function, with the authority to determine what the business needs and when.
What You'll Own
Capital Raising
Lead the financial dimension of our fundraising activity. Develop strategic financial plans, manage the data room, direct financial due diligence, and serve as the principal point of contact for external stakeholders on all financial matters. Following investment, maintain investor confidence through timely, rigorous and credible reporting.
Heat-as-a-Service Financing
Our Heat-as-a-Service proposition demands a financial model as innovative as the technology that underpins it. Lead its financial design and structuring, and partner with infrastructure funds to secure the project finance that brings these installations to fruition.
Financial Strategy
Define and execute a financial strategy aligned with the company's long-term ambitions. Collaborate closely with the leadership team to shape long-range planning, take ownership of reporting, forecasting and budgeting, and anticipate financial risk well before it crystallises.
Board Engagement
Oversee preparation of Board papers and attend investor Board meetings, providing directors with a candid, lucid view of performance, liquidity and risk that enables swift and well-founded decision-making.
Commercial Performance
Develop robust planning and performance-analysis frameworks and monitor the KPIs that matter most. Identify opportunities to optimise cost and accelerate revenue and collaborate on new product development to strengthen gross margin. Equip department heads with the models and insight they need to interpret performance and act decisively.
Finance Function Leadership
Build and lead a high-performing finance team underpinned by strong controls and processes. Own cash flow forecasting and treasury; oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable and reconciliations; and partner with Engineering and Product on inventory and supply chain planning that optimises working capital. Work with our external payroll provider and accountants to ensure payroll, VAT and tax filings are accurate, compliant and timely.
Governance, Compliance and Audit
Oversee financial policies, governance frameworks and internal controls that meet UK and international standards. Lead the external audit process and manage relationships with auditors, tax advisers and other key stakeholders.
Scalable Systems
Implement financial systems designed for the company we are becoming, not merely the one we are today. Harness technology and automation to elevate reporting, business intelligence and operational efficiency.
Who We're Looking For
You will bring a substantial track record in senior financial leadership, ideally spanning the energy sector and high-growth ventures, together with demonstrable experience of raising risk capital and leading financial due diligence.
A builder by instinct. You have guided a business through the transition from start-up to scale-up, or you are ready to lead one through it. Your command of the numbers is deep, and you are equally at ease presenting them to a Board, an investor or an engineer. You understand the distinction between reporting on a business and helping to run it, and when something needs fixing, you take ownership of fixing it.
Key Attributes
Strategic and commercial: you translate financial data into business insight and use it to shape decisions, not merely record them.
A capital raiser: you understand what venture capital investors and infrastructure funds seek, and how to deliver it.
A builder: you can design and implement the team, processes and systems a growing business requires.
Data-driven: sophisticated financial modelling and analysis are second nature to you.
A leader: you develop talent and cultivate strong relationships with stakeholders across and beyond the business.
Hands-on: you move seamlessly between setting strategy and engaging with the detail.
Decisive: you thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment and exercise sound judgement without waiting for perfect information.
Experience We'd Value
A minimum of 10 years in financial leadership, ideally within energy and high-growth businesses.
Fundraising, investment and leading financial due diligence.
Financial strategy, FP&A and operational finance.
Comprehensive knowledge of UK accounting principles, tax legislation and regulatory compliance.
A proven track record of enhancing financial performance and driving profitability.
Infrastructure or project finance, or as-a-service business models.
Operating within a start-up or fast-growth environment.
We do not expect candidates to meet every criterion. We place far greater weight on judgement, energy, commercial acumen and a demonstrable ability to deliver.
What Success Looks Like
Within your first few months, you will have developed a thorough command of our financials, funding position and strategic plans. You will have established strong working relationships with the CEO, co-founders and Board, and will be leading the financial workstream of our seed+ round.
Within 12 months, we would expect to see:
A successful funding round underpinned by a financial narrative investors trust.
A clearly articulated financial strategy and plan aligned with the company's objectives.
Board reporting that is timely, insightful and trusted.
Finance systems, processes and controls fit for scale.
A defined roadmap for the finance team and for our accounting and payroll arrangements.
Tangible progress with infrastructure funds on financing Heat-as-a-Service.
Enhanced visibility of margins, cash and KPIs across the business.
Competitive salary
Stock options
35 days annual leave (UK) inc. public holidays
Company pension
Hybrid working
35 hour working week
Up to 15 days of remote work from abroad each year
Additional benefits to be disclosed at interview stage
