General Counsel Remote (anywhere in United Kingdom)

The Company is seeking a General Counsel to lead its European legal and company secretarial functions. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing commercial and pragmatic legal advice to support the business's decision-making and will ensure that legal services are in line with agreed SLAs. This role involves partnering with the senior leadership team on business strategy, managing legal risks, and overseeing legal and regulatory compliance for business development activities. The General Counsel will also be involved in the negotiation of commercial agreements, managing litigation, and working closely with other senior leaders to maintain effective relationships with governmental entities. Applicants must have a tertiary level education, be a qualified lawyer, and have a strong background in general insurance, financial services, and corporate law. Experience in managing a legal function within the financial services or insurance sector, including oversight of company secretarial and compliance functions, is essential. The role requires a strategic thinker with the ability to influence senior stakeholders, a deep understanding of UK and European laws and regulations, and the capacity to lead change initiatives related to regulatory and legal requirements. The General Counsel will also be expected to manage external legal providers and ensure the professional development and performance management of their team.
