Director, Assistant General Counsel - Technology

The Capital One Legal Department is seeking a dynamic, mission-driven attorney who is passionate about technology to join its Legal team as Technology counsel.

About the Role:

As a Capital One Technology counsel, you will have an opportunity to directly influence how Capital One adopts, develops, and leverages technology platforms and products, while navigating a rapidly changing set of laws and regulations. You will advise teams that are designing and building AI-driven platforms that will power how Capital One works, helping them innovate in a way that is legally supported and well-managed. You will support the business in identifying, assessing, and addressing technology-related regulatory obligations, and you will actively partner with Capital One's technology, product, design, risk, and compliance organizations to brainstorm and problem-solve in ways that anticipate and mitigate legal, operational, and reputational risk. Because our work is increasingly interdisciplinary, it requires an entrepreneurial approach ... and this is what makes it fun. Your legal advice and strategic counsel will be informed by active collaboration with stakeholders from across the enterprise, and you'll do it in an environment that values your insight, promotes continuous learning, and rewards creative thinking.

To succeed in this role:

You are someone who craves meaning in your work, and are eager to drive solutions that reduce risk to our company.

You are an engagement multiplier who is both pragmatic and practical. You view your role as not only a lawyer, but as a trusted business advisor who enables your clients to achieve core objectives in a way that is legally supported and well-managed.

You are a self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced environment, exercising judgment and discretion as you prioritize (and sometimes reprioritize) myriad time-sensitive matters.

You are comfortable being uncomfortable. You're not afraid to lean into gray space when situations are unfamiliar, digging in to understand and focus on what really matters.

You are an effective translator. You can communicate regulatory requirements and legal guardrails to technologists and engineers just as easily as you can deconstruct complex technical and regulatory subjects in a way that other lawyers can understand and appreciate.

You bring an ownership mentality to your work. You want to be in the trenches with your clients, and will not hesitate to pull in legal colleagues to ensure that your clients reap the full benefit of our amazing legal department's experience and expertise.

You see around corners. You anticipate legal and business risks before they materialize, and you help your clients get ahead of issues rather than react to them.

You are a thought partner to the business. You bring strategic, creative thinking to the table, not just legal analysis, and you help shape solutions rather than simply flag problems.

You thrive on relationship building. You invest in genuine, trust-based relationships with your clients and colleagues, and you view those relationships as core to being an effective advisor.

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Guide and provide ongoing counsel in connection with regulatory exams, inquiries, and audits touching technology, ensuring accurate, complete, and well-supported responses.

Review of board reports, executive committee presentations, regulatory filings, and other legal disclosures to ensure accuracy and completeness of technology representations.

Provide advice on strategic technology contracts and vendor relationships, including regulatory considerations related to third-party, cloud, and AI risk.

Serve as a critical partner to technology operations, product, design, technology risk management, and compliance professionals in their collective efforts to develop, build, and maintain platforms that support our enterprise operations.

Maintain strong relationships and lines of communication with business partners, regulators, and other key stakeholders across the organization.
