About the Role
Greater Berlin, Germany Area (Hybrid)(Berlin, Germany)
The Company is seeking a Head of Earth System Science and 1.5°C Overshoot to provide scientific leadership on climate-system risks, emissions pathways, and the implications of overshoot. The role will set research priorities, guide rigorous quality assurance, maintain an active research agenda, and strengthen publications, tools, and policy-relevant analysis. The successful candidate will lead climate risk assessments and science synthesis, translating emerging research into decision-useful information, particularly for vulnerable countries. Responsibilities also include developing projects and funding partnerships, representing the organization externally, and managing, mentoring, and growing a multidisciplinary scientific team. Close collaboration across scientific and policy-focused teams is central to delivering integrated research and advice. Candidates must hold a PhD or have equivalent research experience in Earth system science, physical climate science, climate modelling, climate impacts, or a related field, and bring at least 10 years of relevant experience beyond the PhD or equivalent senior research experience. A strong publication record, recognized scientific credibility, substantial experience leading scientific teams, and a deep understanding of climate-system response and emissions pathways are required. Applicants should demonstrate scientific integrity, quality assurance, and the ability to communicate technical findings clearly at the science-policy interface. Strong partnership development, fundraising, management, mentoring, and English communication skills are essential. Experience with climate emulators, major scientific assessments, international climate policy, or work supporting vulnerable countries is an advantage.
