Interim General Counsel

The Company is in search of a General Counsel to lead its legal strategy in the field of forensic mental health. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing expert legal leadership, with a focus on driving meaningful outcomes at both the organizational and community levels. This role involves being the principal source of legal advice and risk management, particularly in the areas of mental health law and the law governing forensic mental health and involuntary treatment populations. The General Counsel will also be accountable for building and leading an effective in-house legal team, managing external legal panels, and ensuring statutory and regulatory compliance. Applicants for the General Counsel position at the company should hold a Bachelor of Laws (or equivalent) and have a current unrestricted practicing certificate in Victoria. Substantial post-admission experience as a senior lawyer, including a leadership role, is required. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in health, mental health, or human services legislation, with specific experience in mental health law and the criminal justice interface being highly desirable. Key selection criteria include experience in managing litigation, regulatory engagement, and external legal panels, as well as a sound working knowledge of relevant mental health and criminal law acts. The role also demands experience in operating at the Board and executive level, and in leading and developing a legal or professional advisory team.
