Head of Bioreactor Scale-Up, Upstream Modeling

The Company is in search of a Head of Bioreactor Scale-Up, Upstream Modeling to spearhead a specialized team dedicated to process scale-up modeling within the upstream process development function. This pivotal role demands a leader with a Ph.D. or Master’s degree in a relevant field and a minimum of 5 years' experience in process development, particularly with mammalian and/or microbial cell cultures. The successful candidate will be tasked with defining and driving scale-up strategies, ensuring a seamless transition from development to large-scale manufacturing, and owning the development of a proprietary scale-up model. Technical expertise in bioreactor scale-up, engineering principles, and process modeling is essential, as is the ability to communicate effectively with both internal and external stakeholders. Key responsibilities for the Head of Bioreactor Scale-Up, Upstream Modeling include leading a small specialist team, providing technical direction, and serving as the key decision-maker for the modeling team. The role also involves supporting scale-up from small to large bioreactors, providing expertise in bioreactor characterization, and collaborating with internal technical teams to ensure robust process development and transfer. The ideal candidate will have a strong theoretical and practical understanding of the technical focus areas, including bioreactor scale-up principles, mixing and gassing strategies, and process modeling and simulation. Proficiency in at least one programming or scripting language, such as Python, R, or MATLAB, is required, with a preference for experience in Python, particularly in technical tool development or migration. The role is suited to a technically driven leader who is passionate about scientific and engineering challenges and is capable of mentoring and aligning a small expert team.
