Chair (Board-level role)

The Company is seeking a new Chair for its Cathedrals Fabric Commission. This voluntary role is pivotal in overseeing the conservation, development, and sustainability of the cathedrals. The Commission, an independent statutory body, is responsible for decision-making and providing advice on proposed changes to cathedral buildings, their contents, archaeology, and settings. The successful candidate will be expected to guide the Commission in these areas, ensuring that the integrity and mission of the Church of England are upheld. Applicants for the Chair position should possess highly developed communication and analytical skills, with a proven track record of senior-level chairing experience. While expertise in architectural history or practical conservation is not mandatory, a deep understanding of the development and use of cathedral buildings is essential. The role is open to lay persons with a sympathetic understanding of the Church of England's mission, and the Chair will be expected to lead the Commission in a strategic and detail-oriented manner. The position is unremunerated, but reasonable expenses are covered, and the Chair will be required to attend regular meetings, including some travel for site visits and events.
