Interim Head of Software Engineering

The Company is seeking an interim Head of Software Engineering to provide leadership continuity and succession capability across an established software development function. The role will initially focus on customer-facing commercial software, setting technical direction, maintaining engineering standards, and leading teams and delivery. The successful candidate will quickly assess the existing software estate, architecture, teams, and working practices, with potential to assume broader responsibility for the software function. They will bring technical credibility and provide clear direction while engaging effectively with experienced engineering professionals. Candidates should have significant senior software engineering leadership experience at Head of Engineering level or above, supported by a genuine software development background and strong technical or academic foundations. Experience leading established teams and setting technical direction is essential, as is a strong understanding of externally commercialized software and the needs of external customers. Career progression through software engineering, architecture, or technical leadership into senior management is desirable. Previous Head of Engineering or VP Engineering responsibility is an advantage; product, software business, and research and development experience is also beneficial.
